As many of you know I am preparing for my black belt test this November. I study the art of Ninjitsu. The symbol or Kanji ‘Nin’ as in Ninja or Ninjitsu literally means patience, perseverance and stealth. It represents the idea of courage under great pressure. The ‘Nin’ is made up of two symbols. The top symbol is a blade and the bottom is heart. Some have said that this refers to the ability to persevere even if a blade was held directly above your heart.
I think this level of tenacity is not only what makes martial arts great, but it is also what makes CrossFit great. Think about it, Sam Briggs, 2013 fittest woman in the world, seriously injured her right knee and used the opportunity to build a huge amount of upper body strength. Matt Chan, second place winner in 2012, also suffered from injuries but was able to improve and grow this year.
There are also tons of stories at our own gym of people working hard for years and finally getting their first pull-up or muscle up. Others who have mobility issues that have finally gotten a full depth overhead squat.
So next time you get frustrated, and don’t feel like you are making progress, just remember that excellence requires hard work AND perseverance.
Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.
