Started CrossFitting? Was introduced to crossfit by Steve Opiyo at Washington Sports Club a few years ago but didn’t start doing WOD’s until a year ago where I worked with him once a week doing a metcon at a globo gym. Finally took it seriously during the Sectionals WODs this April.
Favorite WOD? Anything with burpees, box jumps, deadlifts, running, kettlebell swings, cleans, pistols…i like it all
Least Fav WOD? Kipping pullups
Sport and Fitness background? I was a competitive figure skater for 12 years and played field hockey throughout high school, among many other sports.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? Steve ran a crossfit style class in the yoga studio at Washington Sports Club and kept convincing me to try it. I was so nervous and intimidated but when I finally tried, and did the filthy fifty as my first WOD, I loved it. I couldn’t do a pushup, burpee, pullup, but it inspired me to get stronger and start lifting weights. It was the hardest thing I had done in the gym and I was hooked. Too bad I didn’t actually start crossfitting then and waited about two years to get involved!
What changes have you noticed since starting CrossFit? Incredible strength gains, being competitive in triathlons and races without any race specific training, and most importantly incredible confidence in myself, my body, and my life outside of the gym.
What’s your favorite CrossFit/CFDR experience or memory? Doing the sectionals WOD’s and surprising myself each workout with what I was able to do.
Advice for a beginner? Don’t be intimidated. Everyone has to start somewhere and most likely everything will feel hard and near impossible. But work hard and the results will come and you will do things you never thought were possible.
Hobbies, interests, activities outside of CrossFit? Being a personal trainer, watching lots of movies, triathlons…not much outside of crossfit.
