Okay, we all know those jelly donuts I keep talking about have sugar (so do those cupcakes, ladies). But what else has sugar? Since the sugar-free challenge last year I have been reading every label before purchase looking for sugar in the list of ingredients. This weekend when I was grocery shopping I got really frustrated with the number of things that had sugar in it, so I wanted to share some things that might surprise you.

First, before we can find the hidden sugar, we have to know some of the names it goes by: Fructose, corn syrup, honey, agave, molasses, dextrose, barley malt, caramel, glucose, sucrose, brown rice syrup, fruit juice concentrate, lactose, maltose, sorghum syrup, sorbital, maltodextrin… (List of 50 Names for Sugar You May Not Know)

Here are some of the strange things, normally thought as “Paleo” that I have found sugar in (sometimes significant amounts):

  • Turkey lunch meat
  • Canned tomatoes
  • Smoked salmon
  • Canned veggies
  • Frozen veggies – especially those with sauces or purees
  • Bacon and sausages
  • Cooked chicken

They add the sugar as a preservative or to add coloring. For things like tomatoes they do it because they picked the tomatoes early in the season. It all adds up, so you need to be an educated shopper.
