Name: Gabe Decker
Occupation: Wealth Management
Fitness/Sports/Athletic Background: A little bit of everything. Most recently I ran the 2010 Baltimore Marathon. Me and a few friends hiked on the Appalachian Trail from the PA line to Harpers Ferry, WV (43 miles) in a day with a few friends. Before that I kept busy doing P90X and playing volleyball.
Family: Married with two children (4 & 2)
When did you start CrossFitting? December 2010
How did you hear about CrossFit? I heard about CrossFit from my brother-in-law last summer while we were at the beach. It wasn’t until Thanksgiving of this year we talked about it again. He pulled up a few videos on-line and I was hooked. I am pretty sure I emailed CFDR the next day.
What do you like/dislike about CrossFit? To me, the best part of CrossFit is that I don’t know which WOD we are doing until I get to the gym in the morning. It’s kind of like a surprise each day. The other great thing is the coaches and other athletes. Everyone does an excellent job of teaching and encouraging each other. It was pretty amazing the first time I saw everyone
cheering on someone struggling to finish a workout. I have never seen that type of support at my local globo gym.
So far, there are no dislikes.
Favorite WOD/Exercises/Skill? My favorite WOD’s are the “named” WOD’s. So far I have only done Fran, Cindy and Jackie, but I like that fact that I can readily compare my times with other CrossFitters. I haven’t done any of the Hero WOD’s yet, but I can’t wait until we do!
Least favorite WOD/exercise/skill? I have yet to meet a WOD/exercise/skill I don’t like, but some are certainly more difficult for me than others. I am most inept at Double Unders, so I guess that would be my answer.
Besides CrossFit what do you like to do? Sports/Hobbies/Activities? My free time is usually spent riding my motorcycles or fixing them, both of which I enjoy. In the spring and summer I play in a men’s doubles beach volleyball league in Baltimore.
Goals for 2011? I would like to be proficient at Double Unders and get my Fran time down to under 4 min.
Advice for a newbie? If your goals to be ready for whatever life throws at you, this is the best solution I have found. It takes a little while to get the hang of the movements and various lifts, but it gets easier the more you do it.
